Global Impact: How UFRN Consolidated Its International Research Network in 2025

In an increasingly interconnected world, scientific excellence is driven by collaboration that crosses borders. Throughout 2025, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) reached a significant milestone in its internationalization strategy, proving that local research has a powerful global resonance.

A recent comprehensive activities report released by the Secretariat of International Relations (SRI) showcases a thriving ecosystem: in 2025 alone, UFRN managed 22 unique international projects in active execution, powered by the expertise of 70 international researchers collaborating directly with our faculties.

A Diverse and Powerful Funding Ecosystem

One of the most compelling indicators of UFRN’s institutional maturity is the diversification of its research funding. Our projects are no longer reliant solely on traditional academic grants; they are actively attracting global private sector leaders and major international organizations.

Among the top international partners investing in UFRN’s research capabilities are:

  • Karoon Energy Ltd. – Leading the volume with 5 active joint projects.

  • Spoken Worldwide & The British Library – Coordinating 4 major initiatives each.

  • Global Innovators & Agencies – Significant backing from corporate giants like ArcelorMittal and Innomotics, alongside global development institutions such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

These resources are strategically managed across various fields of knowledge. The Institute of Chemistry, the Department of Literature, and the Department of History emerged as the most active hubs, each coordinating 4 distinct global initiatives.

Bringing the World to Rio Grande do Norte

Internationalization is made of people. The presence of 70 foreign scientists working on our campuses represents a massive exchange of cultural and intellectual wealth.

While the vast majority of these international peers act as Research Collaborators—strengthening existing networks and bringing global perspectives to regional challenges—some projects have become massive magnets for international talent. A standout example is the project "DECOLONIAL POETICS IN THE PERFORMING ARTS: IDENTITY AND PERFORMATIVITY," which currently leads the institution with the highest number of tied foreign researchers (4 active members).

Looking Ahead: Strategic Hubs for Global Partnerships

The results from 2025 reveal that UFRN has established itself as a world-class reference in specific strategic areas. Moving forward into our next cycles, the university is doubling down on support for high-impact global sectors:

  • Renewable Energy: Leading cutting-edge research in Green Hydrogen.

  • Global Health: Developing crucial studies on tropical diseases, including the Zika Virus and Leishmania.

  • Humanities & Culture: Pioneering decolonial studies, arts, and historical preservation.

For global universities, researchers, and corporate investors looking to generate real-world impact in South America, UFRN stands ready as a proven, highly capable partner.
