The Republic of Latvia is one of the three Baltic Republics. It borders Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast, Lithuania to the south, and the Baltic Sea to the west. Bathed by the cold waters of the Baltic Sea, it has a marshy coastline with sand dunes and important fishing ports. Riga, the capital, is the largest capital of the Baltic republics. In Riga’s historic district, medieval buildings and Art Nouveau architecture mix, declared a World Heritage Site. Forests cover almost half of the territory, which favors ecotourism, especially in the city of Sigulda, surrounded by caves, woods, and rapids. A former Soviet republic, Latvia gained independence in 1990. As a legacy of Soviet rule, Russians make up more than 25% of the population. The country is outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In 2004, Latvia joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU).
